Summer Fun - Totara Reserve, Pohangina Valley

We all wondered if the incessant wind of early December 2014 would ease up and let summer develop.  It did.  And we are glad!

Our first summer outing was to Totara Reserve in the Pohangina Valley with grandparents and cousins.

To work up an appetite for lunch, we decided to take a leisurely stroll through the bush...oh no wait a bit... they don't look like they are strolling do they?  No, a bush rumble it was!

There was a lot to stop and explore though, so the running parts lasted only until a new and exciting spot was discovered.

Large roots of a large tree

Fallen trees and moss and ferns

A bush shelter
Note - Arrow is holding a bucket to collect nature specimens...his request

Cedar, Blossom, Crystal, and Cousin E next to a big Totara Tree

Arrow, Butterfly, and Cedar by the big Totara tree

Grandma and I did a few plant identification sessions with the children.  We found a silver tree fern, bushman's toilet paper and lots of ferns with spores.
Butterfly looked for a silver fern and eventually found one

At the end of the walk Eagle took us to this delightful little outdoor church in a clearing in the bush.

Crystal standing at the stump pulpit while siblings and cousins watch from the natural log pews.
Cedar taking a turn.
Exploring again!

The river was enticing to all on a hot summer afternoon!

Although some preferred to throw rocks into the water.  This made the 2 mummies happy!

Blossom and lupin flowers
- we will read a book called Miss Rumphius in a few weeks which has these flowers in the story

A perfect way to end a lovely day... back home, bbq sausages and family.
